Im goig to order my f350 (2005) v-10 super cab. I plan on putting on 35'' tires, what rear end gears do i want to order 3.73, 4.10 4.30 ? I will use the truck to plow snow and pull a 8000# trailer once a month or so. THANKS!!!
I'd order the 4.30's since the option doesn't cost much compared to what it costs to change them later. 4.56 or 4.88 would be a better gear with 35" tires in a truck used for towing, but the 4.30's will do ok for most situations, just be slower up the hills with the trailer in tow. The V10 likes to rev, so the lower the gear, the better for pulling (up to a point, of course).
will my gas milage suck for everyday driving with the 4.30's ? What kind of rpms wiil the 4.30's have a 75 mph? Will the truck still be able to pull decent with 4.10's W/ 35's? I dont pull every day , but Im looking for a good compermise between the two! It will be a every day driver more than just a plow/ tow truck. Anybody have any experience with the new 05's V-10?
I have the 4.30s and they turn my 33" tires and pull my 8,000 lb travel trailer very well...
Remember, as your tires get bigger, you effectively change your gears to a lower number. As compared to the factory tires, the 35" tires will take your 4.30 gears and "effectively" make them around 3.90.
Here is a link to play with for tire size & gear ratio...
Hey ZRX,
Here is a link to a FORD calculator http://www.andthensometoo.com/calc/tiregear.php,
im running 4.10 on 35's with a 460 in my supercrew and have no trouble pulling a trailer, or with highway travel. You will have more than enough motor to do what you are looking for. SoCal is correct though, you may want to go with the 4.30 now cuz changing them later is $$$$$$.
Good Luck, R.
I don't believe the 3.73 rearend is available with the V-10 anymore. I believe they discontinued that axle with the '05 model year, so you're limited to the 4.10 or 4.30 as stock options with the gas engine. I didn't see the 3.73 on the option sheet when I ordered my '05 250 in October. I've got the 4.10 and am quite happy with it so far. The acid test will be getting my trailer hooked up and on the road this weekend.
It's pretty straightforward to calculate the difference in required ratios.
Divide the new tire size by the old tire size as in 35/31.65 = 1.106, now multiply the stock rear end ratio (which I believe is 4.10 for the new V10) by 1.106 as in 4.10 x 1.106 = 4.534.
So you really need something higher than the 4.30, but that would be better than going with the 4.10 for sure. If you aren't going to be towing the 4.30 would probably be just fine, but since you are going to be towing some heavier loads then you might consider going with aftermarket gears up in the higher numbers.
I have a 03 V10 EX and 3.73 gears and 35 inch tires. I do not pull much and am not disappointed with the performance. I get better than 11 in town and 14 or more on the road at 75-85 mph. I do not pull a trailer often and it is not heavy when I do, but a monthly pull of short distance and 8000 lbs will still warrant 4.30 or at least 4.10s in my opinion. Had I been smarter and went with the 4.30 in the first place, I would have went to 37 inch tires. If you do alot of traveling without a trailer, I recommend the 4.10s over the 4.3. I have plenty of power unloaded in town and on the road and your new V10 has more power than mine. My last truck was a 5.8L Bronco with 35s and the 3.43 gears. It was not worth the cost to change the gears in that one and the X is much better than the Bronco. I am not even considering the gear change now. A supercharger will come before gears are thought about. I know there is at least one more V10 with 35s and 3.73 gears and he is happy with it as well. Whatever your decision is, I am sure you will be happy.
Go with the 4.30's. It's only an extra $350 or so. Much cheaper now than to have to change them later. I have 4.30's with 35's and it is barely enough (in my opinion). When driving in the city it sometimes shifts into overdrive at too low of a speed and bog down the engine. On the freeway/highway it runs perfectly. I think that 4.56's would be perfect for 35's, but it is not worth the $ for me to go from 4.30's to 4.56's.
