I have 114000 miles on my 98 Ranger 2.5L. I just looked through my service guide, for the third time, and I did not see anywhere in there the recommended replacement of the timing belt. Am I missing something or is the timing belt on these engines something that does not need replacing?
Definitely needs replacing, as you are about 20,000 miles overdue. Most people recommend getting them changed somewhere around the 90,000 mile mark, give or take a few thousand miles. And no, they never do specify in the manual when to have it changed.
Yes they need replacement, I did mine at 142,000. It still looked ok, but if your old enough to remember the early nylon tires that took a flat spot when cold they would
kind of slap the road until warm, that is what my belt did. I figured that a timing belt
talking to me wants something (retirement). The new one is on the job and nice and quiet. It's your call on yours, from 1993 they are the tooth with a radius on it and they do last alot longer then the early square tooth.
Yes I agree and it is not something you can rush thru. Go back and look at the tech
postings on changing them, you might find them helpful. Wait for spring.
