Unhappy Intermittant Stalls

I have an 88 Ford Ranger 2.3L EFI that I have had since 1988. The problem I am having is that the truck will stall during driving. It's like someone flips the off switch.

The truck will eventually re-start after a short period of rest.
Last weekend I replaced the inline high pressure fuel filter. The old one was obstructed. (could not blow through it very well).

After replacing the filter I started the truck and it sat there and idled for almost 45 minutes with no issues. Later That day I went to the store and again did not have any problems.

Monday Morning it died on the way to work and again at work. ( work is only 7 miles from the house). Later that day it died twice on the way home from work.

One thing I did notice is when it dies, the fuel pump keeps pumping and pumping. Usually it only takes a couple of seconds for the pump to pressurize the system. When the pump stops pumping after a few seconds the truck will start. When it doesn't stop pumping, it won't start. I am assuming the that when the pump keeps pumping, the fuel lines are not reaching the required pressure. Is this true.

What I saw underneath the truck is the gas tank, then some sort of canister, then the high pressure fuel pump and then the high pressure fuel filter.

What is the proper way to check these out with out have keep replacing good parts.
Does anybody have any ideas on the matter?

Another question: Does anyone know what that first device is between the gas tank and the highpressure fuel pump.

Testing the fuel pressure is the best place to start for the fuel system. I would also pull the codes to try and figure out why the pumps keep running, their on a timer controled by the ECU, not controled by the fuel pressure.

Just read another post about a similar problem and thought of this....

The way the system works the EEC grounds the circuit to run the pumps. In my 1989 manual the wire from the repy (t/lg) does this, this wire runs to the EEC test connector an the ECU, check to see if it shorting to ground before the ECU. Also the power wire to the pump also goes to the ECU, now I'm not sure about this but maybe if this wire (o/lb) is open between the relay and the ECU maybe the ECU doesn't think the pump is running so it never shuts off.
