2000 F-250 SD 7.3 Got check engine light. Showed #4 glow plug inop. Changed plug with FOMOCO ZD11. Took about two hours but, hey, it's the first time I tried it. All connections tight and in good condition. Still get check engine light for same condition. What next?
OK..Now I've got a question that may be dumb to you all but I need to know. Where do these "codes" come from ? How do you get them or retrieve them ? And how do you know what they mean ? Do I need a plug in screen or something ??
RobertJohn, the codes referred to are trouble codes detected by the engine control computer and stored to help diagnostics. You need a reader of some sort to access them. The $tealership can read them for you but will charge up to an hour labor to do so. Many auto part stores will read them for free if you go and ask, some will print them out for you. Readers run from $69 or so up into the thousands depending on what you need to be able to do and how much software you need.
Access is through a "port" or plug under the dash in most of our trucks, some vehicles have the port under the hood if I am not mistaken (but I often am, ask Lovely Wife).
I know that on the '03 you can hold down the trip reset button while turning on the truck or something like that. Then you can cycle through a bunch of neat info.
Don't know if your year has something like that . . .

.
I've done this, but do you have a list of what the different displays are? Some are pretty apparent but the others...
I don't believe this will work on my '99..
It has the old style speedometer the roles over and not digital display..
It might be fun the watch theose #'s roll around though.....lmao
Gave up and went to dealer. They discovered multiple codes and are having a difficult time tracking down the specific problem. While the glow plug may have been defective, there are several other malfunctions that can give the same indication. The dealer (as much as I dislike using one) has the correct tools to diagnose properly.
I used the Actron OBDll test tool that you can borrow from AutoZone. They require a fully refundable deposit.
