I'm looking at purchasing a rebuilt cylinder head. The problem is that its on... dun dun dun... EBAY!
here's the definition of the machine work:
"the heads were carefully selected, cleaned, inspected, guide work performed, three angle valve job, surfaced, and assembled with new valve stem seals."
How weary should i be of faulty machinist work? He says if i'm not satisfied with the work he will give me a full refund.
I can get the head for $260 including shipping. I'm purchasing it because i would like to port and polish the head, and install higher ratio rockers. I'll be buying lots of literature and will no doubt pummel you guys with questions!
The guy responds to email quickly and has 100 feedback, all of which are positive. But none of which are for cylinder heads! They're for watches and silver?!
What do you guys think? It seems like a very good price to me.
You should be able to get the same things done at a local place for less money. You can pick up a head from a junk yard and you can ussally get it alot cheaper if you tell them you just need to be able to rebuild it. I got a 351w motor from a junk yard for $150 he said they are normaly $400 but said he let it go cheap becuase he didn't need to warranty it.
The local junkyard sells tail lights and radiators, and literaly scraps the rest of the car.
I went in and asked for bucket seats out any vehicle, it was a custom application. The guy said "nah we got nothing like that." so i pointed to the junked van with 4 bucket seats in it and asked "what about that one?" that really ****ed him off and he said again that he had no seats. I then asked him if he had a head from a 300 or a 300 motor i could take the head from. He said "we got nothing like that." That place really sucks. But i'll know where to go next time i need a tail light
Do you really think it would be cheaper to get a junkyard head and have it rebuilt with a 3 angle valve job? The $260 price seems to be pretty good to me, especially when compared to the prices of other ones (usually $320 before core charge, 75 if no core!)
I'll call some junkyards that are somewhat close, next closest one is about an hour.
Could you give me a rough estimate for how much the cost of rebuilding a head would be?
It depends, I have seen the same heads on ebay. You said the head was surfaced, how much? If you deck a head a lot you will bump the compression. Did they pressure test the heads and magnaflux them for cracks? Are the following new/used, springs, valves, retainers? Does not sound like a bad deal, if I were to have it done around here, it would probably cost right around there.
Where are you located? I might be able to sell you a rebuilt head cheaper than the Ebay guy. I've got several laying around, and a good friend that runs a machine shop. Mark.
Ummmm.... I'm in Illinois and my buddies machine shop is in Missouri. Let me talk to him tomorrow and try to get a price together with shipping. Feel free to e-mail me direct if you want. Mark.
