After pulling my heads off for a head gasket problem,I decided to check the block #`s ,here`s what I found, passenger side block DGTE,main caps D2TE,drivers side front MIRROR IMAGE 105 with 19 about 1 in. down to the left,B down futher, underneath the oil filter mount 105 with 4H8 under that. What do I have,my source does`t show these #`s. I thank everybody for any help on this that can be given. T.D.
Sounds like an FE block. to get more specific, it's best to measure the stroke or ID the crank.
DGTE is probably D6TE. Which I think would be a 1976 FE block. in which case, it's most likely a 360/390 both have 4.05' bore. I'm not sure it they were making 428s in 76, if so it would have a 4.13 bore.
Thank you also,my source dosen`t show this #,it does show D4TE-AC which shows 74-76 390/4.05 bore. Does the 105 on the filter pad mean the same as the mirror 105 on the front of the engine.I thought that indicated 390 cu in. Acording to the head# D2TE AA it could be 360,390,or 428 ,so I guess the only way to get an idea of what I got is get the crank # .That will be this weekend.I also think that maybe I shouldn`t have opened this can of worms. Thanks again guys! T.D.
If you really want to know what you have, we would need the crank number as well as the bore of the cylinders. The combination of the two determine your displacement. Knowing just the crank or just the bore will leave you still guessing in the end. If you also toss in the rod numbers and the piston compression height, we can get an even tighter number. My $.02's are guessing a mid 70's 360.... Just another curriosity, what vehicle did this come from?
I don`t really know what the engine originated in,I bought it a looong time ago and was told that it was a late model 390,it was in a 77 ranger 2wd but that guy put it in that truck. So I took it to a local engine builder and had it built as a 390 and have been using 390 parts for it ever since. The engine was bored .030 over,Crane 270 cam and kit, heads ported and polished, ignition recurved, headers, and 750 holley on a Eldabrock Prefomer manifold. Many expensive parts and miles later here I am doing it again,I`ve had some head problems for a while so I thought now would be a good time to check it out, then after I pulled the heads I thought about checking some numbers and here we are .I`ve been thinking about spending more money on it so I thought I better find out what I got before I bought something that wouldn`t fit. Thanks again guys. T.D.
