Intermitant no start

My '02 explorer 4.6L has recently given my wife trouble when starting. The last time it did it was when it set for 2-1/2 days, then it did it again this morning only after setting for 16 hrs. It won't start unless you give it some gas. (Which I didn't think would work because it's all electronic now). I will pull the codes tonight and see if there is anything besides a bad sensor in the emmisions system.

Thanks for your help!

Take a look at "read first IAC repair help" at the top of the forum.

once mine starts, it's good to go, or at least has been. I found the post I had earlier about my emmisions trouble:https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=296655. I'll be digging into it tonight. Thanks for your help!

Have you tried cycling the key on for 2 seconds then off. Do that 6 times & see how it starts.

Could be a bad coolant temp sensor, which should show up when you pull the codes.
Good luck with it.

Hmm, that's what my cousin and I were thinking. The code I got was P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation flow Insuff Detected. However, that Check Engine light has been on for some time so I don't know what code this is related to. Does anyone know where I could fine ohm readings for this to test if it's bad?

What's the logic behind cycling the ignition? Does it reset the computer? Thanks!

Try doing a forum search on P0401, you should come up with some good info on this. As I recall from other posts a bad DPFE sensor is a common cause for the P0401, it monitors the EGR flow. Another possibility is a disconnected vacuum hose at the EGR solenoid or clogged EGR ports. If theres a disconnected vacuum hose it might be the reason for the hard starts?

If the fuel pump is weak, cycling the key will build fuel pressure.

Since it starts when you open the throttle , you might also want to remove the IAC & see if it's clogged up.

I replaced the DPFE sensor and while it seems to have solved the CEL light, it was hard to start this morning. Haven't checked into the coolant temp sensor yet. I hope this isn't the beginning of a long string of problems...
