When I'm driving, I occasionally get a surge/acceleration even though my foot is steady on the gas pedal. I thought it might be a clogged fuel filter or air filter, but I changed out those and it still does it. I used Motomaster carb cleaner twice on it, put in new spark plugs, wires, ignition coil, but still it continues. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this?
Two thoughts, both rather randon. You have a manual tranny right? Sometime an autotranny that is dying will act wierd like that.
Second -- are you sure you are hitting on all cylinders? If you have one cylinder that is only firing some of that time, that might explain it. Compression OK all around? Plugs look pretty?
Finally, carb would be most likely culprit I'd think. Don't know much about your carb on an 85 though......
It's at pretty much any cruising speed, whether in town, or on the highway that it occurs and it's seemingly at random. It's not like it's a sudden acceleration either, more of a gradual vvrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRR. When it happens, it feels to me like something has been holding back the engine and it's breaking free, momentarily. Then it goes back to its steady RPM.
I checked the plugs and they have some oil on em, but I know I have to change my stem seals, since the guy who rebuilt it did the rings, but not the stems.. rrrrr... Plus, I'm getting a bit of coolant in #5 and #6, but minute amounts.
