Just wanted to pick you guys brains for ideas about wheels. I am fixing up my truck for a daily driver. I think I may have two originals on the truck and possibly four (other two may be at farm I rescued her from) but do not have any hubs.
Im not deadset on original though I think they look nice. Also eventually I will be switching to disc brakes and am wondering if I will have to add wheel spacers if I get too wide of a wheel. And another thing my five lug pattern is considered 5/5.5 . Anyway if anyone knows a good place to find some reproductions or just a good site to look at my options it would be appreciated.
As for disk brakes and spacers, so that you can use original rims, I have the following additions to my web page. The later, F150 disk hubs are a littler heavier, and the hub sticks out a little further, so that the grease cap hits on the hub cap. So if you want to use stock, original rims, then you should either keep drum brakes (power drums are no bad choice), or use disk brake spindles from 69-74? F100 which have less depth and will not interfere with the hub cap.
Most of the original steel wheels won't clear the disc brake caliper without spacers or grinding the caliper. The curvature on the backside of the original wheels is different.
Newer Ford steelies that clear the calipers don't have the nubs for the dog dish hub caps in the right place.
Newer model truck wheels from Ford are a popular swap, if you like the factory look.
American Racing's web site is pretty good, if you want custom wheels. I had also found one called Wheels Direct or something that would allow you to search custom wheels by bolt pattern...there were quite a few choices, just not in styles I thought were appropriate. I think I found it by searching Custom Wheels or 5x5.5 wheels on Google.
5x5.5 is not an easy pattern to come up with!
I put wheels off 91 ford on my 65 and they look real nice and are still ford. I haven't installed the disc brakes yet even though I have bought them. Never heard that the wheels may not fit. Sure hope my wheels fit because they are real nice and when I bought them I paid a high price for them because they were scarce here then. Curtis
I'm running the 95 painted mag style steel wheels with the center caps on my 65 w/ 74 dics brakes. These are also available in chrome versions. I was looking for chrome, but ran across these at a great price and they've grown on me. Advantages are they are cheap, can be painted any color or way you want and allow space for the discs.
Ford center caps are held on with machine screws and I've seen black and red center caps. When I get my truck back I'll take some photos and get it in the gallery & etc.
I borrowed my Dad's late model to go to Florida to work the hurricanes. His was much more comfortable for the 1300 mi one way trip.
