My exhaust manifold is cracked between the #2 & 3 cylinders. I was thinking I might as well go ahead and buy a set of headers, but I don't know squat about them. Clifford sells some, and I've heard Hedman sells some (Summit), but I don't want to make more work for myself. I was hoping to buy some that would allow me to reuse the stock intake. What size is the outlet on the stock manifold (79)? What are my options here. I'm really just looking to make the truck usable again, but I'd just as soon pay the money for headers as spend the time and effort to rob another manifold off of a junkyard truck. Please advise.
You would be best to look at '87 up EFI exhaust manifolds from a salvage yard or E-bay. They run about $45 a pair and will last the life time of your truck. You can get a new head pipe from Walker for about $55 and take off to your Muffler.
please explain "head pipe" is this intake manifold? Sorry for my ignorance. I'm sort of in the same position and I'm looking for a combination of upgrade/practicality. Got all manifolds pulled off right now and i don't think anything is wrong (taking to machine shop soon to get leveled) but if another alternative makes for since (and power) for close to the same amount of money I'd go that route. Thanks
Hi! It's been a while!
I was thinking of doing headers on my '79 300. The orig. manifold is ok except for one of the exhaust pipe bolt flanges is half broken away, some washers help hold it but it still leaks a bit.
I found Hedman, (part #89300), to have the best price, a bit over $300CDN and I can order from Canadian Tire. (That will give me like $10 in Cdn. Tire money) I'm hoping that it will match up with the intake, can't imagine that it wouldn't, I'm running an Edelbrock intake which matches up with the stock exhaust perfectly. (EGR crap long gone, header has no provision for this anyway, check your local regulations)
The problem I see is that it will be dual exhaust at the outlet so I will need some major exhaust work with two mufflers/cats. Not sure if a Y pipe is a good idea. (comments?)
So now that the salt is on the roads, my truck is laid up for the winter. Have some projects lined up but I will leave the heavy work for my bf, I hate breaking nails!
The head pipe is the pipe that connects the two outlets of the EFI exhaust manifolds. The EFI manifolds are a two piece arrangement like a hedder; but, the head pipe connects to each and then runs a 2 1/2" exhaust pipe down to either your cat converter or you can run back to a muffler.
