Ranger 2001 Extended Cab. My driver's side rear mirror only adjusts to the left using the interior switch. It will not adjust to the right. I have to push it by hand to adjust it. What's the problem and the fix?
I would remove the door panel and inspect the connectons. Then, using an ohm meter, I'd check the switch. I don't have a schematic for your model year. But in it's absence, I'd look at and determine which wire on the wiring harness was the hot wire (using a voltmeter). Knowing that and with the harness disconnected from the switch, I'd place one lead of the meter on the switch at the pin that is normally the hot and I'd place the other lead on the other pins one-by-one and operate the switch looking for a pin that failes to pass current when the switch was operated. You'll have to try all switch positions for each pin. You'll be in luck of you find a "dead" pin; you will then know the switch is bad.
Normally I never advocate throwing parts blindly at problems, but in this case I'd focus on the switch. If the price of a new switch is reasonable, I'd be inclined to take a chance and replace it, especially if you may be confused by or are not comfortable with troubleshooting/verifying it's operation.
Thanks for the advice. Its got to be the switch because I now discovered that both mirrors have the same problem. I think I will just let my mechanic take care of the problem next time I'm in. Who knows maybe my extended warranty I purchased via my credit union will cover it.
