The reason why we have "sub forums" is to spread the load of posts. If 1 forum recieves too much traffic, threads spend very little time on the front page. On a site this large, that is very important.
OK, so now I feel we have an accurate assessment of how many threads I move. The final totals show that after 3 weeks, I have moved over 160 threads out of this forum and into another forum. I've already done everything I can think of to try and lower this issue's occurance. I'd still like to try and improve this if possible, so I'm opening up the door for suggestions on how to do this. Can anyone think of a better/different way to prevent or lower the occurance of this issue? We've got up all the things the staff at FTE can think of....have ya got anything we havn't tried? I'm all ears....or....eyes I guess I should say
There used to be a placeholder for a moved thread - what happened to it? I've seen it recently, too.
True...but what is this "placeholder" you speak of, the little thing where it'll say 'thread moved' as if it's a thread still in the forum, but when you click on it it will bring you to the thread in another forum (the one it was moved to)....ie the redirect?
If that is what you speak of, we don't use those because it defeats the purpose of moving it. You move a thread not only to keep the subjects congruent with the forum subject, but also to disperse the load on the large forums. If we didn't have such a large post volume, we wouldn't need any more than this 1 forum...but we have too many people posting so we have to spread the load to other sub-forums like engine, tranny, suspension etc etc...
That re-direct still holds a spot for a thread that could reside in it's place, it still cluttters up the forum page.
Sorry,
Stang221 but I screwed up on mine too. New user, but old and dumb as far as thread posting on a computer !!!! I will look harder for the right forum next time. At first glance I did not realize things were broken down in that much detail. This a pretty awesome site.
It's human nature, I understand why people do it, I appriciate your post. People will do it, theres no stop to it, but I'm just hoping we can find ways to get new users to check out the site further and read our notices to avoid this as much.
I have to agree with Hungagain's comments. As a new user, I was not even aware you had problem specific forums. Know that I know this, I will be sure to steer towards them, for reading and for posting.
This is all about communication, and I believe everyone is trying to their best in that regard.
I don't necessarily think it's the users fault...i'm not blaming anyone....I'm just looking for solutions to help correct the issue. In other words, a way that people learn that when they first come to the site vs learning from mistakes.
I don’t know if you wrote this web site or not but I think this might help. I am a new user myself and not to familiar to the different forums. You actually moved my first topic. Anyway the suggestion is; when the user clicks the new topic button on the form, your programmer or you can, put a redirection that will open a new window that has the forums and what they are about. The user can then choose which forum is appropriate from the page and that will send them to the correct forum. This shouldn’t take more than a day to write depending on typing and programming skills. And it should be really easy to add the redirection to the buttons. I didn’t know which forum to use that is why mine was in the general discussion area. I don’t know if this is of any use or not to you. I think that might take care of a lot of moving things around for you and let do other site admin things.
I am not as technically qualified to provide an answer to this ongoing problem. All I can hope to do is post any questions, comments, in the proper area. I am very new to this site and still learning to navigate all it has to offer, and it has a wealth of information. I am glad I found it.
I just posted something on this thread and I now realize it was the wrong thread. I have tried to delete the thread but don't know how. Can I? I have already reposted to the correct site. Thanks...Bob
tenbears, I will check with the administrator to see if that is possible or feasible, but I doubt it. Good suggestion/idea however...
walkerrim, your duplicate has been removed. In the future, you can PM or E-mail the moderator of the particular forum, but include a link to the thread in question, as well as any information pertinent to the situation.
I agree with the previous suggestion about putting the component-specific forums ahead of the truck-specific forums on the main forums page--just a simple rearrangement that would encourage users to consider the component-specific forums as they scroll past them to the truck forums.
Another suggestion I have is that it may be near time to consider splitting the 87-96 forum into 87-91 and 92-96(97 for F250/350) due to the number of posts in the 87-96 forum. I know that the trucks are similar from 87-96, but there are quite a few differences between the two groups, so that often the year of truck has to be clarified before a question can be answered.
Both of those items have been evaluated before, the Webmaster does not wish to change the arrangement of the forums, and we do not find it necessary to split the 87-96 forum. It was mentioned in the User Feedback and Suggestions forum a few weeks ago.
