Hello all,
I am contemplating converting my truck to 4x4. I have a donor truck, '87 F150 AT w/3.55 gears, but, I have an 5 speed in my current rig, and i want to keep it. I am not sure if I can just remove the output shaft housing and bolt on the TC or not. I also am not sure whether it is the Mazda tranny, or not, but how does one tell? Additionally my truck has the 2.73 axle ratio, I am assuming that I won't be able to find a 4x4 with that ratio? So, if I convert to either 3.08 or 3.55 ratio, what will happen to my gas mileage? Do I need to do any work with the speedometer if I change ratios? This truck has the 300/6
Thanks
Nick
Look at it, think about it, read about it, talk about it, then go buy a 4x4. Run some searches too, this is the latest of hundreds of threads about 4x4 conversion.
I agree with Hardscrabble but if you're broke like me and want a 4x4, it sounds like you have everything you need(donor truck). It will be a lot of work. But what the hell. I can't remember the difference between the mazda's and the ZF's but the webbing on the side tells the difference. Someone will pipe in that knows. As far as the gearing goes, I have 355's in my 5.8 F250 and get about 11 mpg. As far as bolting the TC to your tranny, I doubt it so you'll have to use the auto or find one at the wrecking yard. Just depends on how patient and mechanical you are. And how long you can go without your truck.
