PCV Valve replacement

Hey all. Have a '91 F250 with a 351 (EFI obviously) and am having trouble figuring out how to replace the PCV valve. It seems to be under the at the rear of the engine under the manifold and into the rocker cover. But the manifold sits so close to it on top that I cant see how it has room to pull out. Does the manifold have to come off? Any tips on how this is done would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mike

The PVC valve on the 302 seems equally difficult, but I was told to simply "work it out and it will come", but have not been able to do that yet.

I asked a Ford mechanic about it recently while in for some brake work. I'm sure mine hasn't ever been replaced (mileage about 80,000), but I had a tune-up about 10,000 ago (engine scoped, new plugs). At that time, the Ford mechanic said everything else was good (ie. distributor cap, wires, etc.).

When I asked this Ford mechanic doing the brake work if the PVC valve should be replaced "just because", he said that in EFI engines, they don't get fouled as much as before, and are generally cleaned during servicing, and so was probably o.k., and to not worry about it. The truck (1988 F150, 302, AOD) drives fine, no check engine light, reasonable gas mileage, etc., so maybe he's right, and we replace these sorts of things much too often--what do others think?
Frank.

I replaced the PCV in my '89 and it was no problem, do it when the engine is cold because you will need the get your fingers in there to pull it out.

But it seems to need to pull "up". And that takes you right into the manifold. Does it pull "out"? Maybe I'm pulling the wrong way because the way I see it, it needs to go "up", and the manifold is right smack against it.

This is when it pays to have a FORD. Climb right up on your front bumper, one hand on the top of the engine, reach back with the free hand, grasp firmly, pull the PCV valve up and back slightly. Leave the hose attached. Once you get it out, change the valve and then reinstall with the hose already on.

I took a wrench to the fitting on the back of the upper intake then pulled it back. Worked like a champ !
