Why is the bracket like this

I just think this is an odd shape for this bracket. It looks like something was there in the past, but now it seems to do nothing.

Does anyone have any info on this?

This is the bracket below the alternator.

That's a bracket for the upper radiator hose that routes around the serpentine belt and not through it. For PSD's with dual alternators. Ford just uses the same casting for all PSD's.

Most PSD owners go ahead and buy the wrap around hose to prevent having a mess on their hands if they just need to replace the belt.

Dual alternator hose, NAPA #9066.

I see, so I can buy a hose for a dual alted PSD and it will go around the belt. Instead of through it? It looks like that would work. I did not realize dualy alts would still be an option. I figured newer alternator technology would supply enough current.

Dual alternator set ups are found mainly on emegency vehicles (ambulances, etc.) that have a lot of power requirements.

The groove in that bracket is to be able to use a hose clamp or "tie-wrap" to insure the hose stays back out of the way of the serpentine belt. Things can get a little too close for comfort without it. If you use a stainless, screw-type hose clamp, you get better abrasion resistance.

I went out and looked at it again in person after I got the answer, that makes perfect sense. Keeps it from getting rubbed through on the belt.

MMMM dual alternator's. One could be for a portable welding rig!

Thanks for all of the informative replies!

I'm pretty sure, despite the high-amp "rating", using a truck alternator to supply current for welding would only result in a fried alternator. The only way I would attempt to power a welder from my diesel would be to use a power-take-off adaptor and run it to a real welding generator. Clumsy at best!
There are too many good gas-engine welders out there to fool with it.

On the dual alt setup, the second alt is hooked up to the batteries for the rear box on ambulances etc. Its not tied into the primary electrical system. That would be cool for your trailer. Your trailer would have it's own Alt! Anyone know if there would be an issue with no load on the alt. when trailer is unhooked?

I've seen a number of trucks on the lot with dual alternators, and they would not have a load on them, assuming they all come without being tied in to the primary electrical system. So I'd think you'd be OK.

Hey, Kevin...

I want to do exactly what you wrote, supply power to the back on the second alternator. But I have a problem....
I just don't happen to have a second alternator. Shucks!
The idea is to let the second one charge a couple of golf cart batteries (12 volt of course) and run the fridge off the batteries.
What are the options and availabilities for obtaining a second alternator? Do I already have the bracket(s) and such?

I don't know about ambulance conversions, but the dual alternators as supplied from the factory by Ford do indeed both tie into the main electrical system. Under normal load conditions, only one of them is doing any charging, and the PCM selects which one that is. (Usually swapping from one to the other each time you start the truck.) Under higher load conditions it can bring the second one online.

Will the routing be ok for the NAPA 9066 hose WITH the Dieselstop coolant filter installed?
