No special tools required for the pump replacement, just patience. Search this forum and you'll find a couple different ways to get this done. Some remove the turbo housing, I personally did it without removing it.

You'll need a 1-1/4" box end wrench to get the banjo bolt on the back of the pump off. Especially if you do it without removing the turbo, since there's no way to get any other tool on it, and you can only barely get that one on there with the turbo baseplate in the way like that. Then just the usual assortment of screwdrivers and sockets and extensions to remove everything else in the way.
Is your 96 a California truck? Let me know if you're able to do this without removing the turbo. I say doubtful.... done it several times and it is NO FUN! Trubo has to be removed to get at that banjo bolt. You may get it off, good luck getting it back on!
Make sure you check the little fuel line seals and everything when you get things disconnected. Good time to replace them.
