anyone have vibrations on the front wheels?
my steering wheels shakes duruing braking going downhill.
especially towing.
and no i have not step on the brakes hard,i pamperd my truck for all the 3000k miles it have.
would warranty cover it?
thanks
This has been a very big problem for the 2004/2005 F150, and many people have been affected because of it. By 7500 miles, I had my truck in for warped rotors 5 times (3 times resurfaced, 2 times replaced). The problem is that for 2004, Ford decided to go with hard brake pads but stayed with the soft rotors that they had been using for years. So no matter how many times the rotos are replaced, the problem will keep reoccuring.
SOLUTION: Finally at the beginning of November 2004, Ford revised the front rotors; a new "harder" rotor. The new part # is 5L3Z*1102*AA. As long as you're still in warranty period, just go to the dealership and have them replace the rotors with the "new" ones. For me and many others, this has fixed the problem.

I took my '04 to the dealership a week ago, complaining about grooves in the front rotors. So far, it hasn't affected the braking, but it didn't seem right to me with only 4300 miles on the truck.
They told me this was "normal" and didn't seem too interested in doing anything about it.
Do you have to raise hell to get some action from the dealership?

I didn't necessarily have to "raise hell", but I did go to the dealership armed with info regarding the "new" rotors (found info on the 'other' big F150 forum). I talked to the service manager to make sure that they installed the new ones.

What information did you find, aside from the part number?

Not alot of 'information', per se. What I did find was that alot of people were having the same problem as I was. I found out about the 'new' rotors the day after they were released. So I went to the dealership. The SA said that they would need to resurface my existing rotors since there was still plent of thickness to turn them. I went round & round with the SA, explaining that I was on my 3rd set of rotors, and that in addition to that, Ford release a 'new' rotor, so there was obviously a problem with the existing ones. Long story short, he wouldn't budge. So I spoke to the Service Manager, and he was very easy to deal with; he had the 'new' rotors installed right away.
took the truck in to the dealer yesterday
great service from my dealer
fixed the rotor problem, re-flashed the pcm.
much better then my prior dealership
thanks
I had some really uneven tire wear in addition to the steering wheel shake during braking. Stealer resurfaced the rotars and have had no issues since - JT.
Beware of resurfacing rotors. All that means is that they shaved off enough metal to make them 'true' again. Shaving off metal = thinner rotors = easier to warp. Always try to get them to replace vs. resurface.
in todays day and age, you can almost buy a new rotor for the price of resurfacing it. If it is under warranty, you'd be silly not to make them buy you new ones. As a side note, I have a fxr built 03/04 and have had no problems with the brakes at all. I went looking for scoring marks, but found none. I think these brakes/rotors are especially sensitive to the type of driving that one does.

went to the dealer today for my vibration, friend of mine is the mechanic so he let me go back with him, my f-150 has taken a liking to throwing the balance weights on the tires. also he asked me about my brakes shuddering and told me that the new rotors are designed and should be getting to everyone around the end of january. found out some good info, alot of shudder in the brakes comes from the old design rack and pinion, if you get under your truck and look at the sticker on the front of the assembly in the middle it should have a green dot/mark on it which means it is the new design if it does'nt your most likely getting a new rack and pinion. i'll give mine a week and see if it still vibrates, went on the road test with the mechanic and even showed him the earthquake that happens when you roll down the back windows (screw) bla bla bla i've rambled enough
Have 12K on my FX4 and have had the brakes vibrate on long descents in the mountains. I figured it was a rotor problem when they get hot, I use the brakes sparingly in these situations and didn't expect them to warp this soon.
Thanks to the info on this thread I will have ammo when I speak to my dealer about the problem.
Rotors seem to warp very easily on many new cars/trucks. I recently put new NAPA high end rotors on my wife's accord and they seem to be great quality and "made in USA" Many other new rotors I was looking at were slighly less, but made in Taiwan or China. I have read from other post the USA made are better quality metal, maybe finally got tires of messing with inferior rotor probs and went with a USA supplier. I agree with bamorris though that if they warped at full thickneww, haw fast will they warp when turned, esp. if they have to cut to min. thickneww to true them up. Only have 78 miles on 04 Screw, so I haven't had the prob YET. The binders seem 200% better than the 04 Chevy 4x4 Silverado I traded.....Good luck

Good info dtupac, I just read this post yesterday, went to the dealer for service on my van and asked service manager about the rotor warpage that I now seem to have(only slight as of yet) and HE mentioned the rack. He told me tech would have to look to see if needs to be replaced(said he didn't know why Ford was replacing them.Mine has the green dot so I guess I'm OK. Said he didn't know of any new rotors and prob. would cut mine(how it's not a big waste of time) My build date is Jan. 04. I would recommend everyone check, even for the hell of it.
