i have done a lot on my truck but have never changed out a transfer case. i own a 89 f250 4x4, 7.3 idi. looking at the new one i have it doesnt seem that hard. the speedo sensor, and what i think is the sensor for lighting up the 4x4 on the dash, shift linkage, and mabe 6 bolts or so, and of corse diconnecting the driveshafts. is there anything i should be concerned with. i would say that i am not a novice but nor a pro. is this a driveway job???
p.s. i would also like to thank everyone on this website for such a great job. you all have saved me bunches of $$$. your knowlege proves invalueble to me. thaks a lot!!!!
But the little white flakes pile up and turn into dollars in my pocket here in WV.
All you have to do is install a snow flake relocator system on the front of your truck to collect the benifits of this natural occurance.
I'll take a couple of feet of snow over a hurricane any day of the year.
'90 F350 drw 7.3 ZF5 4x4 . Just had mine out rebuilding the ZF. The transfer case is easy. unhooked the stuff you mentioned, while laying on a creeper. pulled it backwards and lowered it to my chest, rolled out from under truck, Replaced in the reverse order. can't get much easier good luck Phil
I did mine, too. I would recommend NOT getting under it and lowering it onto your chest. It comes loose all at once and it could definitely break a rib or two or your head. I put a piece of plywood through one of the britesteps under the door, lifted the plywood up to meet the tcase. Then I put a jack under the middle of the plywood where the plywood met the tcase. I loosened up everything and pulled the case loose unto the plywood. Then I jacked the plywood down and slid it onto the driveway. Installed by myself in reverse order.
Pick up a new adapter gasket before you start. It is the gasket in between the transfer case and transmission.
Make sure you're not under the back of the transmission when you remove the transfer case unless you like oil showers
i too am needing to swap a borg warner 1356, but the apater that goes from the transmission to the transfercase is cracked down the middle, does anybody know where i can find one?
well just got the new t case in the truck and its great. never relized the old one was that bad from the getgo. also i got this t case from ebay for 350 bucks and 75 shipping....not bad i think. there is a guy on there who sells lots of t cases for cheap. took four hours and a couple of trips to the parts store. taking it out was a pain. must i say i need to invest in some ratchet wrenches. end caps on u joints just fell off and i think those were needle bearings? so went to the store got u joints, replaced the u joints while the shafts were out and had to go back later, i forgot the fluid....duh! anyways i have never done a job this big on my own and i would say it was an easy job. definately saved me cash. i would say its a drive way job. thanks for all the info guys!
