I have a 71 torino 302 in a 83 ranger.Bought it cheap recently and havent been able to drive it.I put in a fuel pressure regulator, set the points, basically checked it all over.No vacuum leaks I can find.Checked firing order-was ok.Timing is in question but my light broke and I've always been able to get close "by ear".I can't get it to idle at less than 1100 rpm's without dying and when I put it in gear it stalls out.It has a holley 4412 carb and I set idle mixture at a turn and a 1/2 on both.Float level is good.Even with another carb from a good running Bronco I get the same results. Both carbs are manual choke.
At my wits end here and out of solutions.Am I missing something?I hope so and someone here can clue me in. Thanks so much.
info I have: casting #D10E-8015-AA
firing order- 15426378 (#1 is at the back center?)
I havent been out to tinker with my truck (ground up resto) for a while but if I remember right #1 is the first left (passenger)cylinder. You are working with #4.The firing order is right but it rotates counter clock if I again remember right. Hope this helps
thanks for the reply.I think I meant to say the the #1 was in the back center of the cap.And you are right about the cylinder being first on passenger side.I had it running earlier but when I shut it off it cranked hard and wouldnt start.Maybe a timing problem but I thought I could get it close by ear.Is the timing this touchy?
Its not too touchy but you have to be kinda close. Have you checked tdc? If someone ever moved the dizzy then it may not be straight back.you can check the harmonic balancer if you dont want to pull dizzy cap and #1 spark plug. Pulling the parts is usually better cuz the balancer could have incorrect timing marks.
