'98 B3000, 3.0L of course, auto, 2WD. Started it up this morning, got about 1/3 the way out of my garage and the truck stalled. Never did that before. Restarted about 10 times and each time it stalled immediately. Finally got out of the garage and goosed it a couple of times and it seemed fine. About a half hour later I started it again to run some errands and it stumbled a little when I left the house. In about 5 seconds it was fine, and ran as it normally does to my first stop about 6 miles away. Started it up there and it sputtered around for awhile and every time I went on the throttle it almost died. No power at all. After about 3 minutes the idle smoothed and I thought all was well. As soon as I hit the throttle it sputtered and spit. I finally got out of the parking lot on the wrong end of a tow truck. (first time I've had to use AAA) Now I'll wait and see what my mechanic has to say. Meanwhile, how would any of you diagnose the problem from this information???
Try this, tap on the MAF with the handle of a screwdriver, not too hard when the vehicle starts to run erratic, if it is the maf, usually coaxing it in this manner will get it to run right. still need a new maf sensor, this is only a diag. tool, like I said, this USUALLY works.
Because the CEL never came on, he pretty much had to do it the old fashioned way. He did some obvious tests like fuel pressure, pulled the IAC lines, and a few other things, and then determined is was running way lean, pulled something on the MAF sensor and the truck smoothed right out. Apparently with the MAF sensor gone, the computer was reading very little air so gave it very little fuel. That's pretty much the story as I know it now. I'll know more when I pick the truck up tomorrow.
