how can I tell what axle, gears, tranny, and t-case is inna truck or is there really anyway I can tell?
Also, is the fuel mileage (F-150) any different beetween a 4 speed manual with granny gear, and a 4 speed manul with overdrive? I already know the granny gear tranny is more reliable than an overdrive tranny.
If your rear axle has a removeable rear pumpkin then its a 9" if it has a rear cover than its an 8.8, as for the gear there should be a tag on on of the bolts on the cover/pumpkin, if not post the axle code and someon on here can help you out, the t-case will have a tag on the back (side facing the rear diff) that will say, buts its probably a np 208. Your milage with the od tranny should be in the 16-18 range depending on the motor/gear/driving style and conditions are.
Caleb, It would be helpful to know year, size, engine, tranny as well as door tag reading if it applies.
All trannys 3,4,5,6,10, or 12 speed that are not overdrive have a tailshaft output 1 to 1 with the impute. Overdrive trannys reduce the output of the tailshaft which allows the engine to turn slower which should equal better gas milage.
From what I have heard the 2 tranys are simmilar, ecept that the od traded in the low granny gear for a higher 4th gear. Around town in average driving conditions they are both prity much just 3spd, in my owners manual they suggest not shifting the od to 4th until about 50mph. other than that the first three gears of the od, are very close to the last 3 gears of the standard.
The 83 Spec book recommends shifting into OD on the 4OD tranny at 40 mph.
I know my six will lug at 40 unless it's glass level and I don't need to accelerate.
Of course I've got 3.08 rear end, so at 40 I'm only turning about 1050 rpm.
I prefer shifting at 45.
3 sp tranny F series except 4.9 w/ 2.47 rear end (now that's a highway axle!):
1 3.26
2 1.75
3 1.00
4 sp OD tranny F series w/ 4.9 except 2.47 and 3.00), 4.2 and 5.0 only:
1 3.25
2 1.92
3 1.00
4 .71 Yea baby, that's what gets me past the 7-11.
The 4sp od tranny's and the 3sp (good ol' "3 on the tree") are actually based on the top loader 4sp from the mid 60's to the early-mid 70's, not as strong though.
