Very simple question.....why do the f150's and every other truck out always have there tailpipe coming out of the passenger side of the trucks? Is there a reason for it to come out of the side? Why can't the be behind there trucks like most people like them to be? Just curious? I have never owned a truck before this one, so I'm just curious is theres a reason behind it? Thanks! ~Matt
I know Chevys and GMCs dumped their exhaust out of the drivers side for years and years. They also had goofy front axles on their trucks too (opposite side that the Ford pumpkin was on ).
That makes sence, I know it was a dumb question, but jumping from 96 Mercury Sable into f150 XLT Supercrew is a hole different world for me and I can tell you this much....My f150 is a dream for me! I love it in every which way I can imagin, it even rides so much better then my Sable did! Very happy with the truck and very Happy with Ford!!
One other reason: the federal government has an exhaust-noise standard, which they brilliantly measure from the REAR of the truck. If the exhaust exits to the side, then there's less noise being generated at the rear bumper.
The reason is... In some states like Jersey it's illegal to have the pipes exit under the rear bumper if you have cap on the truck. I went through this with them on my F250HD with a cap. Luckly I asked at the inspection station before I put the dual stainless system under it. They told me it's fine that way, but don't bring it in for inspection with the cap on it.. I had the system built to exit on both sides in front of the rear wheels. They had no problem with that..
It's stupid law because it's illegal to haul anyone in the truck bed anyway..

I had a Toyota truck that had the tailpipe coming out on the left side. Then I noticed that the fuel filler was on the right. My Ford has the tailpipe coming out the right side and the fuel filler on the left. Makes sense to me.
The gas filler being on the opposite side makes alot of sense. The pipe not comming out the back for tow and noise level reasons also makes sense. But My 04 Explorer with a tow package has the tail pipe sticking straight out the back on the drivers side. So if Ford wanted to they could do somthing different. Even if it was just putting a nice chrome tip on. I think At least the FX4 should have a tip.
