On my 1994 F150 with a 302 Auto. There is a noise in the lower part of the engine. It is not a rattle like a bearing but more of a thunking but real low sounding. I took it to the dealer where I bought it(new Ford dealer, not used car lot) and they looked at it, took the belt off and said it was the smog pump, not to worry about it. It does get quiter with the belt off. It is there from the moment you start it till you shut it off at night. It is loader when it idle with no load on the motor. I used one of those mechanics probes and it was loadest at the front of the motor, and really load when you put it against the pan itself.
Ok here are my guess's tell me if I am close or anything else I should be looking for?
First I am thinking oil pump?
Second Front main?
Timing chain???(dealer said it shouldnt be as it is a double roller chain set).
Like I said it is not a rattle like a regular bearing would do, so I am at a loss with out actually tearing into it just to see.
Any help or ideas would be great! Thank you in advance
well, in order to rule out the front main and oil pump you could dro the pan and do a quick inspection, i guess that would be the only real way to know for sure.
