I have a '94 Ranger. When I engage the A/C button on the A/C control panel, my compressor only engages for only 3 or 4 seconds at 10-12 second intervals. So, in other words, my compressor is cycling too much and the pressure cannot build. I checked pressure, and it seems to be fine, but it's hard to check when the compressor won't stay on. I tried to ad some refrigerant, but the compressor needs to be on full blast for this to work.
I have read a lot online, and have gotten alot of idea on what it might be. Below is a list of what I have done so far, with no resolve...
1) Replaced the WOT (Wide Open Throttle) relay.
2) Charged the A/C system with 134a refigerant.
3) Checked the pressure (Hi and low-end).
4) Replaced the compressor and clutch.
I have read about the possibility of a faulty clutch cycling switch. Do I have to discharge the system in order to replace this? Where is it located? The part is only $13 and I thought it wouldn't hurt to try.
Any other ideas on what might make it cycle so erratically.
No it is not necessary to discharge the system to change the switch. It is located on the low side hose near or on the accumlator. A two wire switch. You can check it by jumpering the connection temporarily. If it stays ingaged try changing it.
