I'm looking to replace the blown 360 in my 71 F250. One of my friend's dads has a 76 F150 with a low mileage 351W in it, but the tranny is blown. He wants 300 for the truck. I figgure I can buy the truck, drop the engine in my 71 and have the left over body parts (front fenders, hood, ect.) I have been needing for the 78 bronco I have been working on. Then I could sell what ever's left on eBay or somewhere and get at least half my money back, so it seems like a good deal any way you look at it.
Now I know my original C6 isn't gonna bolt up and I'm going to have to find another tranny, but other then that how hard would this swap be? What would I have to do as far as the engine mounts and stuff go?
I saw somewhere that the 351W shares the same bell housing bolt pattern as the 302? So would it be possible to use a T-5 tranny out of a Mustang? This truck will be a daily driver and I'm thinking the over drive would be a huge plus, but will it stand up to the 351's power?
The motor should drop right in the 76 mounts should be the same, as far as the T-5, it will hold up to the power but the output shaft on the T-5 I think is longer than the other ford standard transmissions and requires a spacer plate in between the bell housing and the trans. But check into that first I know the older 260, 289 needed that plate for the T-5 upgrade, if you could make it work somehow with the mustang cable clutch set up you could use the mustang T-5 bellhousing. Also make sure if you do go to a standard trans, you make sure the flywheel and front damper are from the same balancing 1980 they changed so don't use a early damper with a newer flywheel, it will cause a bad viabration and ruin your motor over time, good luck.
