I already fixed that!

Good Day - I am in need of some assistance.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

<o></o>

My check engine light came on (I have a 99 Eddie Bauer Expedition). I had the codes read @ AutoZone - the codes that came on indicated that there was a problem with both the Mass Air Flow Sensor and the O2 sensor(s). After further investigation, the 02 sensors tested out as A-OK. The mass air floe sensor tested as bad - so I replaced it and cleaned my air filter. During my test drive it ran great for about 1/2 mile and then began to chug and run like it was REALLY missing. I went back home and disconnected the battery cable to clear the error condition and went out for another drive. Everything appeared - then - to be fine. I drove to the gas station this morning and filled up. I neglected to put the gas cap on when I started it up and got "The Light". Knowing what had caused it, I cleared the error condition one more time and drove on into work. The truck ran better than it did when we bought it. Then, at lunch, "The Light" came on again. <o></o>

<o></o>

My question is this, given my recent experiences, could this just simply be a contingency from the gas cap debacle, or something more from the computer?<o></o>

Talking get a dealer diagnostic

Just bought a 1998 eb 5.4 98,000 miles on original engine and trans...drove it 10 miles from dealer and the check engine light came on ..took it to my local ford dealer they replace pc valve assemby 200.00 dollars. Nice story, huh. but i left out that the dealer had let the battery die and replaced it that day with a new one and also had let the fuel tank run completely empty. I wondr if someone left the gas gap loose. The owners manual says run the car for 4-5 cycles start drive and stop and that should clear the light. i read this after the dealer replace pvc valve assembly. any case i am sure you have driven 4-5 times since the light but take it to the dealer pay the 79.00 for diagnostic and see what they say. but first check all of your vacumn hoses and pvc valve. also if your truck has close to 60,000 miles dealer is to replace pvc valve (valve only not assembly) for free no charge according to owners manual.

Yeah, the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve can become congested with crankcase "blow-by" and the valve inside will cease to function. VERY inexpensive part from autozone and relatively easy to replace. On most cars it's not generally part of routine maintenance, but it should be! With the mileage you have it won't hurt to change it. Hope your light goes off after 5-6 cycles. If not, just have autozone re-test it to verify the error code. Best of luck!

Thanks!

Thanks Y'All - <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

<o></o>

It turns out that this time the codes were very specific to the front 2 O2 sensors. <o></o>

<o></o>

I have a question beyond that - what is the optimum number of miles that this truck should be able to drive on a full tank?<o></o>

My 98 w/ 127k miles gets up to the max around 350 miles per tank. My wife drives it normally, mostly highway but w/ traffic occuring everyday (live on Long Island! ). It also depends on your gear ratio as well. with some getting a little better mpg.
