Misfire...Maybe?
Last friday while driving home my "check engine" light started blinking. I noticed the engine was running rough, but thought maybe it was just cold.
Looked up the blinking light, owners manual says it flashes due to misfire.
Finally got it home and started checking under the hood and haven't found anything out of the ordinary.
Here are my symptoms:
1. Engine idles fine, no problems.
2. As soon as I put it in gear, I can feel it start to "misfire", although unless you drove it everyday you wouldn't know it.
3. I drove it down the street and back up it misfires, and the exhaust starts to smell really bad, like when you light fireworks. That strong sulfur smell.
Here is what I've checked:
1. All the vacuum hoses
2. The IAC valve, resistance is within the spec. from my haynes.
3. Made sure all spark plug boots were seated.
4. Took resistance readings on both coils, results as follows
Passenger Driver
Pri .5 ohms .5 ohms
Sec 13.5, 13.5k ohms 12.7, 13.0k ohms
Although the secondary readings are high (Haynes says 6.5 to 11.5 kohms), I don't feel the readings I got are high enough to indicate failure. Also because there so close to each other.
Another possibility I thought of may be the catalytic converter may be going bad.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
