A buddy of mine just called me with a problem. The tranny is his 97 Suburban seems to have taken a dump. This morning everythng was fine, but about halfway home it started "acting funny", but got him home.
Now it won't back out of the driveway, reverse is completely gone, and in the forward gears it will go, but won't shift any higher than second gear.
Also, when he puts it in reverse it makes a horrible metallic skreeching/whining noise that I can clearly hear over the phone.
Is there an electronic gizmo that could be causing this? Torque converter? Or should we skip the troubleshooting and go straight into disassembly?
Not an expert, but ive had many a 700r4 go out. Very common. Most people find the 700r4 to be a weak tranny. They can be built to last by the rite mechanic. This site might help your buddy...http://www.700r4.com.
By '97 it was a 4l60e, or 4l80e. It sounds like the typical GM electronic trans.. Just out of curiosity how many miles are on it? The trans is toast, if it wasn't it would shift past second.....

It's a 1500 burb, so I guess it's the 4l60e. 85,000 miles.
Yeah, that's about right... MY dad was the shop manager for a local ag company. Their service truck fleet was 2 fords (87, and 88 both 302/aod), and 2 chevys, a 94 and a 95, both 350s with the 4l80e, the 2 chevies lost their transmissions within 100 miles of eachother, is the same week, about 96k miles. The shop guys were all bent out of shape over having to drive a ford with 300k+ miles on it....

It probably isn't shifting up to 2nd gear- it's locked in 2nd gear. That's the "limp home" mode the computer assigns when the tranny fails. You might have your buddy check on the price of a "crate" tranny instead of trying to rebuild what's in it.
FYI- if you religiously keep those trannies out of OD in town, and NEVER tow a trailer in overdrive, they might make it past 100K. On the other hand, towing a 5000 lb trailer uphill with the selector in OD will cook one of those in less than 100 miles- they only overheat once.
Thanks for all the input. I finally tracked down a chebbie site with a decent forum last night. Evidently there is something called a "sun shell" in the tranny that is a common fail item, usually takes out the 3-4 band with it. I guess it's rebuild time.
