what the difference? i never understood any thing about exhausts except thing like cats and mufflers.i just want some info on exhaust and whatnot. can you hurt a engine running straight pipes? thanks
If you have the cat and some tailpipe, you aren't going to hurt anything. You may have put a flat spot in the motor somewhere if the lack of backpressure causes a problem, but you would have noticed that by now.
Exhaust manifolds are usually cast iron and run all the cylinders into a main pipe very close to the motor. FE (352, 390 etc) had almost no runner and the manifolds were very restrictive. Other engines had some variation, the the FE motors were the worst ever.
Headers, replacing manifolds, run individual pipes for a fair distance to a collector, then into the exhaust pipes. Sometimes these pipes are "tuned" and given a specific length that makes the engine run better, usually at high rpm.
Many late model cars use stainless steel short headers for reliability and power purposes.
If you run really short pipes like a dragster, you can get debris and cold air or moisture into the engine--not good.
Watch for this to be moved, as it is general automotive discussion.
If the pipes are too short, or too big, you lose backpressure. You'll also run the risk of burning up the valves with straight pipes. I wouldn't worry about it if you have a cat and a decent amount of piping. I've seen burnt valves from open-header systems, however.
