Oil change suggestions?

I just finished the first oil change I have completed myself on my 97 4x4 and was wondering if any of you out there had any suggestions on how to keep the oil from the drain hitting the crossmember and splattering everywhere and how to keep the oil from the filter from running everywhere, but where I want it to.

uhmm, that's the fun part man. Burning oil on your hands, it is fun!! It's not that hard with the filter, just keep it uhhmm RIGHT SIDE UP! lol It is hard to keep it from going every which way when you have your plug unscrewed.

Just have fun!! Lick the oil of your hands, it is good for you!

Oh yea, that is what I'm talkin' about...Havoline 10W-30 and 10W-20 is the shat! I probably drink a few quarts of that stuff a day easily. Quaker State isn't bad, it taste a little sour sometimes though...so I just take shots of it.

Hey Georgia boy i wasn't making fun of you. I was just being silly. Sorry if that offended you.

Personally, I use Mobil1 5w30 full synthetic. I only use it because I get it for the same price as the regular oil, so I don't see why not.

As for the oil change, you just have to work with how it flows out, hitting the crossmember and everything. When removing the filter, hold it with a rag. That usually helps A TON when the oil starts running everywhere.

When cleaning up, degreasers work great, but as long as it's not a major mess, spraying brake cleaner will clean the oil off of your hands, the oil pan, crossmember, basically everywhere. I could use a can of brake cleaner in 3 oil changes. I work at SEARS auto center, so I have access to boxes of brake cleaner. Whenver we have an oil pan that hits the crossmember or other obstacle, you just gotta get the oil pan lined up right, and spray it down with the brake cleaner afterwards to get all the oil off.

Hope this helps,

Rman

I usually unscrew the filter about halfway, and then let it drain all that it will, then remove it. Never had any problem with the oil draining out of the pan.

Hold a big funnel underneath the hole when you pull the drain plug, and use the funnel to direct the oil into the drain pan. You have to be careful not to burn one of your arms on the exhaust pipe (as I learned from experience) because you'll need two hands.

You'd better have a pretty big funnel...I guess. 6 to 7 straight quarts of oil shooting inot that thing would fill up pretty quick I'd imagine. Of course I've never tried it!

I guess I should have mentioned that. I use about an 8" to 10" diameter funnel, with a spout that's almost as big as the drain hole in the oil pan. It's also tall enough that it covers most of the distance between the oil pan and the drain pan. The oil just shoots right through without backing up in the funnel. You do have to let the oil cool down enough before draining it. Otherwise the funnel can get pretty warm while you're holding it.

Before too long the flow out of the oil pan has slowed down enough that you can take the funnel out of the way and let the oil drop straight into the drain pan without hitting the crossmember.

"spray it down with the brake cleaner afterwards to get all the oil off". Brake cleaner removes paint!
