Hello, my husband recently bought a "brand-new" Ford F-250 Deisel 4x4 pickup. He noticed that the engine is atually a 2003 while the truck is a 2004 model...is this normal??? Shouldn't the engine be a 2004? When you buy a vehicle of a certain year, what exactly is required to be made in that year? Anyone have any idea? He is very concerned about this, though I think he can't do anything about it since the dealership will most likely say that it was the 2004 "style" or "trim" he purchased - I don't know if the engine specs changed from the 2003 models to the 2004 models but just because the engine was built in 2003 doesn't mean it is a 2003 model engine...right? Just thought I'd ask in a forum where people might know the answer...I already know what the dealership is going to tell us...
Well is it a vehicle that was made in 2003 and sold in 2004? I've seen '02 style f150's called an '04, and I was like um no. But it was an '04 just the older style. (not boxy)
I guess that can be normal. Companies do that. Did you pay full price? If so take it back and say I want a brand new 2004 model (everything) not something that the factory had left over. At least I think that's what happened. A left over motor. Didn't the 2004 diesels have more power?
The obvious question is; how does he know he has a 2003 engine in his 2004 pickup? If he's going by build dates, the 2004 model year started in September 2003 (or earlier). Some of the engines would have been built prior to production so it could easily have been built as early as July or more.
i bet its more common then people relize. considering that ford already has a shelve full of engines built by the time your trucks starts its way down the assembly plant. heck his tranny or rear end could be 2 years old for all we know. if his truck was built on say sept 2 2004 and the motor was built august 28 2004 i guess that could be the diffrence between an 03 motor and an 04 model year truck. if he ever goes shopping for a motor home almost all motor homes/chassis arew a model year off the chassis is a model year older then the body. atleast as far as class C's go.

In 04, Ford made the F-150 Heritage Edition, which was basically the older (03) body, but it was in fact an 04.
I bought a 93 Aerostar Van on Dec 29, 1993.
The van was assembeled in Nov 93 and the engine was assembeled in Oct 93.
I found this out when the head gaskets blew out at 85k miles.
It was listed by Ford as a 93 with a 93 serial number.
A silent recall was issued for the 94,s on the head gaskets.
That is why I was checking. I got no help from Ford.
not uncommon it just depends on what they have and when they are switching over. my 92 bmw was built early in the year and by midyear they switched over the technical upgrade engine that put out more power and used regular gas. i guess they can do whatever they want as long as the output specs etc. match up to what they advertise it at.
I ahve an 85 with the exact opposite - It's titled and registered as a 1985 but it has a MPFI 302 wich "technically" wasn't introduced untill 1986' - What turns out is it's actually a late 85' - problem comes to play when buying parts - have to ask for parts for an 86'. Something along this line may have happened
[QUOTE=Mil1ion)Sounds like the heritage model.
A 2004 with the old design [QUOT)
I would say that since it is a diesel, it would be a Super Duty.....
The original post was about the Super Duty, but the post regarding the Heritage model was referring to a F-150.

Yes, when comparing the 03 and 04 engines... the '04 6.0's had a different fuel delivery design, as well as a few other minor mods to deal with bugs found in the 03's.
that is my point i bought an 04 thinking i was getting an 04 motor included as an 04 truck with the bugs worked out i feel there is some misreprestion on fords part and the dealers or am i just an idiot thinking when you buy a model year you get the motor of said year
