Hey guys, going to be replacing front rotors and pads this coming weekend on a 02 f350 4x4. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to remove the rotors if they are stuck? The wheels are a pain to get off every time I rotate the tires so I figured the rotors are not any different, probably stuck even worse. I'm sure you try spraying with penetrating fluid and then tapping with a hammer, probably not that easy. Trying to plan ahead, so if anyone has any tricks to remove siezed rotors please post your thoughts. Thanks, Chad
I did the front on my 2000 F250 4x4 last month and the rotors where not bad to get off. After removing calipers and caliper brackets I just had to lightly tap from the backside with a ballpien hammer and the rotor came right off. I replaced with new rotors, so I was not concerned with damage to the old rotor. Hopefully it will go smooth for you!
Now the front rotors on my 99 Expy where a different story. Had to cut them into pieces of pie with my Sawz-All and then beat the tar out of them with a big sledge. They where completely fused to the hub. They each came off in about 6 pieces.
I just turned 99,000 on my 2000 F-250 and replaced all the brakes for the first time. I found a porta-power worked really well. Just insert it between the lower control arm and the rotor and they popped right off. The fronts were really easy but the rears I had to put a great deal of pressure on them. I used a block of wood between the jaws and the rotor to protect them. I wouldn't recommend a steel hammer on the rotor as you only have about .030" extra to turn down before you have to replace the rotors.
What worked for me was tapping with a small punch around the rotor where it meets the hub and chipping away the "stuff" (almost looks like a weld). Once I did that the rotor came off with one tap to the back. I spent 2 hours on the one side (with a BFH) before I figured this out and the other side took me about 10 minutes.
Don't know if this works for your year. My F250 is a 94 so....
To remove the rotors on my 94, you have to remove the studs. You can do this best with a shop press but a block of wood, a sledge hammer and something(a block of steel or similar) to put against the face of the stud and whack the sledge down onto will work in a pinch.
What I did is place the rotor and hub onto two blocks of wood with the stud back between the two blocks. I then take a block of steel(in my case another hammer with flat sides) and lay that on the stud. Then I whack the top side of the flat with the sledge hammer(one of the shorties). This works really well, but isn't the "technically correct" way to do it. repeat for each stud.
Replacing the studs in the new rotor is done the same way.
Not hard to do but don't whack the face of the rotors unless you are throwing them away.
Just got done replacing the front rotors and pads. This was the first time I have ever done this to a truck or car. It was definately easier than I thought it would be, only took an hour and ten minutes. Rotors were barely stuck, had to tap them a little and then they broke loose. Anyone thinking of doing this, but not sure if they can handle the job, its definately do able. Thanks to all the replies, they really helped me out. Nothing like the feeling of a job well done and saving big bucks in the process. No more wobbles for me, or for a while anyway. Going to get new pads for rear later on today and get that taken care of as well. THANKS AGAIN, Chad
