OK- Right now I'm just being lazy because I don't have time to check it out myself. On my '95 ranger (XLT 3.0) when I come to a stop, sometimes, the rear end makes a clunk that shakes the truck just a little, not violently. I was just gathering some ideas! Thanks in advance!
it could very possibly be axle wrap, it is where the axle twists, usually caused durring acceleration, but can also be felt durring breaking. this could be caused by your rear leaf springs being too soft, one way to possibly fix the problem would be to go to napa (or jcwhitney.com) and get some helper springs or add a leafs, these will only possibly fix the problem, an almost defenite fix would be to go to jamesduff.com and get their traction bars, they only cost around $50 and they greatly reduce axle wrap and they will greatly increase your traction on or off road
I have checked out this problem with my 98 4x4 and it looks like the slip yoke sticks and when you take off the springs wrap up and makes a clunk.I am planning on takeing the driveshaft out and drilling the yoke for a grease zert. Will let you know if it fixes it.
I agree with msipek. If the slip fitting just aft of the tranny was not lubed it could hang up and release causing the wierd clunk. A zerk is a good idea. My F250 did this but fortunately it had a zerk so a couple of pumps and the problem was gone.
