oil question

Hi guys, I was wondering about winter grade oil. I live in Ohio so our average temps are anywhere from 40-0 roughly. Someone told me that it's either Shell or Valveline 5w40 synthetic is suppose to be so great. That might be true but is it worth $12.84 a gallon? Ouch!

I spend the winter months in the New Mexico mountains where its mighty cold...well below zero sometimes. I have been using Rotella 15w -40 with no problems. I like to change oil every 3k so its really not cost effective for me to go with synthetic.

There are pro's and con's to both I'm sure.

The $12.84/gal is Shell Rotella-T 5w40. You can get it at Wal-Mart

I presently use the Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w40. I have always used Rotella oils in my truck since new and went to the synthetic to see if it would help the cold weather starts, and it did considerably. I also ran my first change of synthetic @10,000 miles to see if I could safely offset some of the cost by running a extended drain interval. The oil analysis came back fine, so I will be running this change the same way. I also continue to learn extra benefeits of using synthetic oils here on this site repeatedly. You will find that allot of people like the Mobil Delvac 5w40 Synthetic for diesel engines here also. There's allot of good advice and knowlege here at this site.

Use jt-8 from mystic, it is diesel rated and comes in 10w-30, would work great for a winter oil, and its about 1.75 a quart.
