I'm really starting to worry about cavitation in my F-250. I checked the radiator for coolant treatment but found no evidence of any. I'm starting to think the previous owner did not add it to the system. The ol' girl has 200k on the clock and I'm thinking the damage has been done. Maybe I should sell her. She runs strong and seems pretty reliable, I really like this truck...
Get test strips and check the coolant for the additive. If there isnt any, go to a cat dealer or a big rig shop and get some NALCOOL or go to napa and get their coolant product and put it in. It should be checked twice a year. That cavitation problem is a freakish thing, some do it and some dont and those that do, do it at different rates and severities. Dont worry about the problem until you come to that bridge, but doing nothing is wrong.
Cavatation is the breakdown on the inside of the crank bearings, right?
Due to lack of oil and a pressure change that causes air bubbles.
Sort of what happens at a submarines propeller, right?
The air eventually pits the wall enough to cause a hole and oil is forced into the coolant passages. Coolant is allowed to get into the oil passages after the vehicle is shut off and there is no more oil pressure.
partly right except the cavitation occures on the coolant site. and it causes pin holes to form in the cylinder walls. the cylinders then will leak and could hydrolock. also gass pressure from the cylinders will pass into the coolant system side compounding the problems...
