Oil Question

I recently purchased a used 2002 CC with the PSD. I am coming up on my first oil change. I bought some the following oil at Sams Club. It is Chevron Delo 400 15W-40 Heavy Duty Motor Oil. It says it is rated for all diesel and turbocharged engines. Will this oil work? I have no idea what the guy before me put in it nor do I know what the dealership used when they changed it to be sold to me. I can take it back if its not what I need. Any information you guys can provide would be helpful.

Just because a majority of people in the world are entertained by Shell's high advertising budget and thus buy it doesn't make it better than Delo. Quite to the contrary, In my Strong Humble Opinion, Delo 400 is a better oil than Shell. What do i base this on? It isn't based on Joe blow down the street using it in his Studebaker. It is on the sheer number of Used Oil Analisis (UOA's) results I have seen that shows lower wear numbers on average with Delo 400. It's also because Shell uses a lower quality group-I base oil compared to Delo's near Synthetic grade Group-II+ base oil. Will using Shell hurt anything? No, Shell will provide adequate protection and give GOOD UOA results. Personally, I like the GREAT Oil analysis results from Delo400 that damn near rival synthetic UOA's. This of course is just my $.02, do with it what you wish.

On Edit: I just want to add that any of my comments above should not be applied to Shell's Rotella SYNTHETIC 5w-40. Just as Terry Dyson of the Blackstone labs Intepretation service has said on BITOG, to loosley quote "I have seen many Shell Rotella UOA's that weren't nothing special, I have seen many SYNTHETC Rotella UOA's that are truly outstanding." That being said by him, I will again go on record and say, the best UOA i have ever seen on a 7.3 PSD was with Shell rotella SYNTHETIC 5w-40. That UOA stood out amongst many already excellent UOA's. Personally if I was to choose an OIL for a 7.3 PSD, I would choose these: Dino; either Chevron Delo 400 or Motorcraft Powerstroke 15w-40....Synthetic; Shell rotella Synthetic 5w-40. The delo and motorcraft oils performed close to identical in most UOA's I have seen. The Shell synthetic just seemed to perform a cut above the other synthetics available, and at a cheaper price.

To briefly answer your question: yes, the oil you have is the correct grade for your engine, and all opinions aside it is known to be a good oil for diesels.

The only advice I will give you is that if you live somewhere that it gets pretty cold (consistently below 30F), you might want to use a lighter grade oil in the winter (a 5-40 synthetic, or 10-30 mineral oil) it really will make your truck start much easier when it is cold.

You have an '02 PSD, any oil that meets or Exceeds API CH-4 is fine to run in your engine.

Thank you for the advice. I live in the south where it stays nice and warm all year round so I think I will stick to the same oil. I didn't want to start an oil war. I just wanted to make sure I didn't need anything special since I didn't know what the people before me used. Thanks again!!!
