Hi, Im new to the forums and I was just wondering if anyone could help me.
I recently bought a 1996 Ford F-250 Diesel Powerstroke with a manual transmission. It has about 126,000 miles. This morning when I went to pull out of my driveway it had a hard time going into reverse. I tried to go into other gears and the lower the gear, the harder it was to get it into gear. I could get it into 2nd with a little trouble but it was nearly impossible to get it into 1st and Reverse. I took it to the dealer (which its still under warranty) and they took a look at it. They figured out that it needs a new clutch which I figured it did and that they would replace it. I left my truck at the dealer for a couple hours and they called me back to pick it up and said that it didnt need a clutch and that it was only a barring that was worn. I forget exactly what it was called but it was a white plastic circular piece that was cracked in half. They said that was the problem.
I drove home from there and the clutch and transmission seemed to be fixed. But after just an hour or two of driving it started having the same problems as it did before. As of now, it sits in my driveway not wanted to go into Reverse and 1st and I struggle just to get it into 2nd.
I realize a clutch can be an expensive item and It seems to me that they wanted to take the easy way out so they just replaced a simple barring. Does anyone else have this problem? I was just curious to know how to deal with this problem and if its more than just the clutch. If you have any information or think you might know whats going on here and what I should do to fix it or look out for in the future please let me know. Thank you very much for your help!
that plastic bushing is underneath the dash on the pedeal linakge, i put a hiem joint in there to fix mine and never had a problem again. even after replacing that bushing the shaft can be work bad not helping the problem, i got my part off ebay from someone in arizona, look under powerstroke clutch sounds like the master cylinder or slave is dying is the master low on fluid? is it discolored? have mettalic look to it? leaking anywhere.
I tried pumping the clutch and I still couldnt get it into gear easily. I forgot to mention, when the engine is not running you can shift through the gears fine but once you turn it on, you cant get it into 1st or Reverse. When the mechanic took a look at it today right away he figured it needed a new clutch. Do you think it needs a new transmission? or is it definitly something to do with the clutch?
Here is the ebay link to the clutch part that barebackjake was talking about. I just bought one myself because I noticed that in first gear the truck starts to move with the clutch pedal barely off the floor. I'm sure that before to long I would be having problems like you.
It does sound like the slave cylinder . Have the dealer check it out again while you have a warranty . Keep on the dealer until you are satisfied the problem is taken care of , because on the chance it is the clutch you don't want to pay for one ( $$$$$ ) .
Let us know want you find out .
You might want to check the linkage from the pedal to the master cylinder. If you look under the dash just above the gas pedal and find the master cylinder push rod. at the end of the rod is that plastic bushing they replaced at the shop. What generally happens is the pin on the part hooked to the pedal linkage that the bushing clips over wears out and allows slack that doesnt let the clutch fully disengage by not pushing the master in far enough.
If that clips breaks its always because of a worn pin. A new clip is only a temporary repair. Good thing is you can buy just that short lever with the pin. It is held with on bolt to the rod that goes across to the pedal.
Thanks for all the help! My truck is in the shop right now and the mechanic said the master cylinder was leaking and they are going to replace it. I dont know if that is the only problem but I am going to try to pick up my truck today or tomorrow and Ill let you all know if it still seems to be acting funny. Is there anything that I should make them replace along with the master cylinder? My warranty is still good for about 3 weeks or so and I want to try to get them to replace everything I can before the warranty expires.
What are some more problems I could be running into in the future. It has 126,000 miles so Im assuming more will come. Thanks for your help.
a small right angle air grinder with a cut off wheel is the best for cutting that shaft up there i made the mistake of cutting it too far and having to weld a extension on it. but love it now and wont have to deal with it again
Just had the clutch master cylinder replaced on mine. Dealer said the rod to activate the MC was broken. Dealer replaced the MC and then I had the problem of not being able to put the truck into gear. Dealer towed truck backand found the bushing on the clutch pedal broke and now need to replace the whole clutch pedal. Sounds fishy to have to replace the whole clutch pedal for a bushing. Any input?? I think the bushing broke which caused the clutch pedal to drop to the floor and that broke the MC push rod. Again, any input would be appreciated so I know I am not being taken for a ride...
its the lever the master cylinder pushrod hooks to.It wears out and the pin gets worn on the side toward the master cylinder. Then the retainer clip fails. Replacing the clip is not good because the excessive movement causes the new clip to fail in a short period of time. That lever is avaliable by it self.
Well I got my truck fixed and the master cylinder was leaking. They replaced the master cylinder and it fixed all the problems. Thanks for all the help guys
Lucky for me its still under warranty so I didnt have to pay a thing
