On my '77 F-250 I have this thing on the front. It looks like a steering stabalizer that goes hoizontally between the front wheels but it has 2 lines feeding into it from the power steering unit. I have 2 lines that go from the power steering pump into like this little valve and from the valve I have 2 lines that go into that steering stabalizer thing. Well I took it off because it was leaking terribly. I called around the the local shops and no one carried them. I called the ford garage and they said that they are not even made anymore. I also called some other local shops to see if they would rebuild it but no one will. My truck is now a manual steering which sucks. Does any one know where I can get one of these things? Please help.
That is the older style power steering. It's hard to find parts for and expensive to fix. Most guys swap in the '78-'79 style integral power steering - it's readily available and a much more reliable unit. There is a tech article that gives the process in steps - check it out, link at top right of page.
Sorry I took so long to respond to your email, don't check that too often.
At the top right of the page is the 'Tech Artcle' link, then go to 'Steering and Suspension' where you will find a list of articles. I thought there was only one, but infact there are two articles on swapping better power steering onto your 77 F250 4x4.
'Integrated Power Steering for your Highboy' describes using a 2wd box on a 4x4 pickup.
'Power Assist To Power Steering Conversion On An F250 4x4' is the one I was thinking of, using 78-78 F250 4x4 parts on your older pickup.
Read through them both and give one a try... I have a 2wd, so I have no experience with either job.
