Bring's up another question. What does Ford do with these DSB bought back trucks??
They usually sell them at an auction. I almost bought a Ford buyback '04 Expedition. The dealer had bought several at a Ford auction in Atlanta. I saw the paperwork stateing it was a repurchase, the complaints that the previous owner had with it, and the repairs Ford had made before reselling it.
They claimed they had sold quite a few of them with no returns or complaints. Ford gave a 12 month 12,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty on the buyback models, regardless of how high the miles were on the buyback.
It was a super nice truck. The only thing I could find wrong with it after a weekend drive was a very slight steering nibble at 70. The tires were the original contintenals that were cupped very bad, so I think that was it. The dealer put a new set of cooper's on it after I said something about the tires.
I didn't drive it after they put on the tires, so I don't know if it fixed it or not. I got chicken, and didn't take it, even though it was a fully, and I mean fully, loaded EB model, for appx. 10,000 less than I had seen lesser equipped, higer mile units.
The Ford buyback auction is why you see 04 models at the independent dealers.
Tried to find the driveshaft material spec for you all...can't find this part number in the system . What I did find is for the 133" wb (4602), it says the shaft is aluminum as well as the same thing as in the TSB 04-25-8: They are going to a snap ring u-joint (instead of the staked u joint) Figure 4 of TSB 04-25-8. I can't say that is a sure way to tell. Every part is supposed to have a part number on it. If you look at the shaft and see "5L34" on it somewhere, i'd say you got the new one since the "5" stands for 2005 and this fix has to be released under a 2005 part number (You can't revise 2004 part in 2005 and release it as a 2004).

Thanks for the info, I am going to put it on ramps this weekend and try to figure out what part number it is. Any idea where the part number is on these things?

My wife and I both think so!
SIGH OF RELIEF ANYONE?
Dave
I had my driveshaft replaced in October part # 4L3Z-4602-XB. My vibe did go away but returned after a couple hundred miles. I turning the truck back into the dealer Tues.
I hope so too.. Same part number? Back then? I will have to look, I was told this was a brand new drive shaft. Did they also install dampners and what not on yours?

I hope your vibe stays away.
Big, did your vibration come back all at once or gradually?? I'm thinking unless these driveshafts are bent as a factory defect it's safe bet they are having them rebalanced then reusing them. Tack welding steel weights to them in different postions just like balancing a tire is the way it's done. Maybe yours tossed a weight if the vibe came back suddenly?? Is the vibe as bad now as it was originally??
Hey Dave, they are smooth when their right, aren't they?? Mines like riding in my living room down the highway except for the nibble that comes and goes.. I'm waiting untill I have the tires rotated to see if that changes anything before I get on the dealer about it.
We're doing good on the thread and getting some facts instead of the whining..
Brought the truck back again today (first brought it in on the 10th....they reindexed and rebalanced tires and did a reflash. It still vibrates and it does it the longer I drive.
Today, they told me not to drop it off as they can't do anything else for me. They said they have no idea what those analyzers are that are recommended on the TSBS and I should call around to dealers trying to find one who has them.
Also, since the reflash-my MPG shows 15.4 and nothing else. The service mgr said that after a reflash is done, the mileage resets at 500-1000 miles..is this true?
Calling Ford is like dealing with the dealer....USELESS! They are absolutely no help at all....why do I stay with Ford? 6th one and they don't care about loyalty....they are uselss with problems and questions......

Seems like your next obvious step is to find another dealer with the analyser. But definitely stick to your guns about it. This forum can step you through the whole process if you use the search button correctly.
Thanks for the update, ITDave. It sounds like they replaced your driveshaft with the same type out of the factory. Some of them seem to be out of balance. Maybe hitting potholes or curbs are what cause some later in the life of the truck to go out of balance and the vibration mysteriously appears. It's just a theory.

My XLT Scab had vibrations on the way home from the dealer lot. Called my salesman he said to just do a shakedown cruse and see if anything else is wrong. 2000 miles & 1 month later they could not fix any of the vibration problems, the FSE even said the vibrations were normal.
I got my money back with the help of the DSB in 13 months and 23,000miles.

I had the vibration dampner installed back in May. I have also had the ring and pinion gear replaced.
My vibe came back gradually. I was told then it was a new driveshaft.

My vibe came back gradually and it is a bit less than before. The driveshaft was brand new, I watched them take it out a a new box. I guess they could have "rebuilt" it somewhere else and shipped it in. I had to wait from the middle of July waitng for the driveshaft. I ahve also had a ring and pinion gear replaced, along with road force balance and vibration dampener.

See this kinda throws a wrench into the works. Makes me think I was right about the driveshaft whip problem. That would come from a multiple piece driveshaft that doesn't have enough supports.
Years ago when I was working construction for friends dad he had a 65 Chevy pickup... 8ft bed regular cab, 3 speed stick shift with a 6cyl engine. Every 6 months the support bearing on the driveshaft had to be replaced or the truck felt like it was going to shake apart..
Anyway I see in the newest TSB that they address this support bearing with a different type..
Did they change that support bearing when the new driveshaft was installed?? If the vibe came back gradually then it sounds like something was wearing gradually...
I would get under the truck and grab the driveshaft in front and behind that support bearing and see how much movement there is...
