93 2.3L engine knock (pinging?)
I recently bought a 93 2.3L Ranger XLT Supercab that starts to rattle so bad it sounds like it's falling apart when I'm cruising over 55mph (only does it over 55mph). 93 octane fuel reduces the knocking some but doesn't eliminate it and I've tried several different kinds of off the shelf fuel injector cleaner but nothing seems to work. Is there an easy fix for this or do I have larger problems?

Try removing the "octane reduction plug". It is located: attached to the wireing harness at the firewall, on the passenger side. It is a small gray plug, about 3/4". Just pry back the tabs, and remove it. This will retard the timing about 2-3 degrees, and allow you to use a lower octane gas without pinging.

shorting bar might help. also might want to try cleaning MAF/MAP with some electrical cleaner. also heard of others trying a high discharge coil pack instead of OEM. bottom line is the 2.3/2.5L engines ping like hell. good luck! (i stopped the ping on my '98 2.5L by switching from the platinum plugs to copper plugs and changing my shift points)
