I have a 2.3L, 4-cyl manual '95 Ranger XLT, 78K miles.
A few months ago, I started getting a weird problem. When the A/C compressor was on (meaning any climate control position other than off or vent), I got clicking noises about every 6-8 seconds and a drop on the volt-meter -- but only in neutral.
If I'm in gear, it works just fine, but in neutral or with the clutch depressed and the compressor running, the voltage drops on the meter, inside lights dim for about a second, etc. Anybody have an idea why this would be happening?
Sounds to me the a/c refrigerant is low, causing the compressor to cycle too often, which when it turns on the engine will drop RPM, and since the alternater doesn't put out enough volts at low RPM, the volt meter drops. Have the 'freon' amount checked, repair any leaks if any, and recharged.

I would try adding a 2 oz. can of refrigerant oil to your a.c. system. I have had the same problem a couple of times with different vehicles and it fixed them.
