I use newsgroups to solve computer problem all the time. Thought I'd see if I can get some engine troubleshooting help. I recently bought a 94 Ranger, automatic, 3 liter. Returning from my first road trip in the hills of Mississippi, I began to notice a considerable loss of power. I had to put my foot in the floor to maintain 70-75 mph. It was as if the catalytic converter was plugged. Eventually the check engine light came on. I made it home to find the transmission oil pretty well cooked. I also had "saved" codes (157 or158) about the MAF sensor voltage and another saved code (136) about "system indicated lean bank #2". I brought it to a transmission shop and was told to fix the exaust problem. It was suggested that the heat from the converter heated up the transmission. I replaced the exaust from the converter to the tailpipe (and the fuel filter) and brought it back to the transmission shop. The transmission was declared fine. I cleared the codes and went to Florida (I live in Louisiana) and experienced the same lack of power. No transmission fluid cooking this time. I have since installed new cap, rotor, coil, and wires. No change. I did again have codes 157 and 158 that say "Mass Air Flow sensor below minimum voltage" and " Mass Air Flow sensor above maximum voltage." Also code 336 which states, "EGR circuit higher than expected." The truck runs the same with the MAF disconnected. A new MAF cost $90. Any suggestions? (Yea, buy the MAF you tightwad!) Can the MAF have such an effect on power? I have to really get on the gas to maintain 75mph on an interstate overpass. It is sluggish at city speeds too. This truck also has a large Leer camper. I can't see where that could slow it down that much.
