I've heard it said that the F150 tailgate from that era is identical to the Superduty gate, which would widen your field of possible replacements if true. F-150s had different color options, which is a complication, but since you're looking for a black one, that should match more easily.
I ruined my tailgate back in September. I couldn't find a factory replacement at any of the local salvage yards, so i resorted to ebay. I got the tailgate shell(no hardware or access panel for under $150 with shipping. It was ready for paint when it arrived. Only problem is that it is lighter weight metal than the stock tailgate. If you put alot of stress on the tailgate, i recommend a factory one. For light duty the aftermarket one is fine. I found a site yesterday in one of the posts on this board that carries genuine ford parts including the access panel and tailgate shell. I think the tailgate shell was over $300 and the access panel was $75 or so.
I heard the same rumor that f-150 tailgates will work. The tailgate shell I ordered had f-150's listed as applications for that part # too.
