OK, I've been reading posts from here to fix a minor problem, and now I think it's worse. I'll start at the beginning.
Last week I pulled P0171 and P0174 codes, which means lean condition on bank 1 and 2. The truck was running fine except for the light, so I ran some fuel injector cleaner, replaced the pcv valve, and reset the computer (disconnected battery for 15 min). All was fine for about 2 days and then the same codes came back. I read some posts here about cleaning the MAF and IAC, which I did, and reset the computer again. That was last night. This morning the idle was all over the place. I suspect I may have damaged one or both of them. My question is is it possible to check the MAF with a VOM, or some other way, before I spend 100 bucks for a new one? what about the IAC? Ironically, I don't have a check engine light now!
Sounds like you have a vacuum leak, my friend. I would listen under the hood with the engine running, or spray some carb cleaner around suspect areas and listen for changes in idle. That will narrow down where the leak is.
Off topic, but how do you reset your computer becuase my "service engine soon" light is on just becuase I installed a Remote starter on my truck. I need to get that off there.. anyone know how?
I reset mine by disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes. I wouldn't recommend it though, because I've learned that is the reason for my rough idle. Apparently the computer must relearn the sensor data curves or something. The idle eventually got better, and I found a vacuum leak that was the problem with the original lean codes. The leak was in a 90 in the rear of the motor on the passenger side, just above the pcv valve. I would recommend replacing it if your vehicle is 6 years old or more, as mine crumbled in my hand it was so dry rotted.
lol, well My truck is an 01, not a t-model...So does neone know how to PROPERLY remove your "service engine soon" light??? brian??
Well Homer, I wasn't specifically talking to you. I don't consider my 98 a t-model either. If you want the light to go off, use a scan tool like everyone else does. geesh
Homer the light is an indication of a problem detected by the ECM. There is probably a parts store in your area that will read the ECM and tell you what the code is. Post the code back here and I'm sure someone can help you out.
Autozone and Advance are two in my area that will read the code for you.
