Changing Sparkplugs

Just A little F.Y.I. on th 2.3 litter engine buy your wires and plugs and pay someone to do the work. I performed this thirty minute tune up tonight it took about 4 hours and I got a severe case of ford rash. Dont get me wrong I love my truck and with the msd wires and new plugs on now it was really worth it but i felt like i needed a rocket scientist for this ususally simple job. if anybody has a tip to make it easier next time it would be appreciated.

you must be talking about the plugs under the upper intake manifold. yes, they are hard to get too, and as you found out it does take time. hopefully you put double platinum plugs in so you don't have to worry about them anytime soon.

Actually, while the plugs are a pain and I don't want to take off the intake manifold for that job, my mechanic friend (who changed said plugs before he sold me 2.3L Ranger) and I both agree that with the proper tooling (Haynes manual lays this out!), the job is not too difficult. I can get my fingers to them and the proper uni and extension can get 'em, too.

In about 15K miles or so, when my plugs are 10K from their 60K lifespan, I will be checking on them, if not chunking them. We'll see how they look by mid-year...

I think you only have to tune up the rangers every 100,000 miles. Even on the 4.0s they are a pain. I didnt mind the extra time it gave me a excuse to not watch the huskers loose again.

With a set of long needle nose pliers and quite a few extensions, I swapped out the plugs on the driver's side in a little over an hour. I'm not sure if these were standard, but my wires had these pull handles on them that made it alot easier getting the wires on and off the plugs.

Still, whoever came up with the 2 plug per cylinder idea on this engine should be shot. A combustion chamber redesign would have accomplished about the same thing.

I had te pull handle too but i just upgraded to a set of MSD 8.5mm wires that did not have them an it was a vehicle specific application. Cant wait untill next time. BTW I would not wait until 100k to change the plugs The centers of five mine pulled out its awonder the truck even ran. they were changed about 40k miles ago by my dad.

Yeah, but it would have been more expensive.
