New ford owner
looked up the site and im impressed. i am a Titan owner and now a 98 f150 xlt 4x4 4.6 owner as the chevy malibu didnt like the semi we were driving next to!!! (long story, we survived the car didnt.)
anyway i now have this nice little truck, and the wife can drive the Titan.
i was looking everywhere on the specs for the truck i have. i know its a triton engine, (4.6 or 4.7 cant remember!!doh!!!) its an xlt supercab 4X4 auto.
what kind of fuel mileage do they get?
what power figures do they get?
any bad things to look out for?
whats the tranny in there and the transfer case?
is there any lockers or limited slips for the rear end?
thanks people.
look forward to posting some more soon
the engine is a 4.6
as for the rear end read the door code sticker {bottom row of numbers one says axle post the code here or look at the axle on the back passengerside is a tag 3# and if it says LS after it, then is a limited slip rear. the #'s are the ratio.
on mileage ive heard everything from 14's to 21. depends on how heavy your foot is and if your towing. good truck overall...
Firstly ive only done 50 miles in the truck and when i came to change the oil i found the pass. side outer driveshaft boot was split on the front.
i decided to drive into town to get a new boot and put it on when it exploded!
100 bucks later and i have a new driveshaft in there! why dont they sell the outer knucke separately?
still, i just unbolted all the flange bolts, the main axle nut, removed the caliper and the top ball joint and pulled the whole deal out of the way and replaced the complete axle.
took me 35 minutes to do so why the hell did Ford want 250 dollars for 3 1/2 hours labor>??????
anyway, the tag numbers on the door read this
tp/ps R AXLE TR SPR
F/ 9 19 U 4D
any help on what these all translate to would be helpful.
thanks again and if anyone else has probs with the front driveshafts, do it yourself! a 1"3/8 socket for the axle nut, a 12 point 12mm for the flange nuts, 12mm for the caliper bolts 14mm for the upper balljoint nut. easy.
remember to replace all the cotter pins with new.
As for the transmission Im not sure i have the same one and I would like to know It is a U code. Transfer case is a borg-warner 44-06.
Hope this helps

Sorry Jimmy, but you had me scared... like you'd lost faith in your transmission...
(Think of Igor speaking) Good tranny, he didn't mean to hurt your feelings....

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
what power figures do they get?
220Hp @ 4750 RPM
265Ft/Lbs @ 4000 RPM
any bad things to look out for? Occasional problems with this vehicle are failures of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor; restriction of the EGR passages inside the intake plenum, 4.6L only
whats the tranny in there and the transfer case? 4 speed autow/locking torque converter, non limited slip from your door sticker 3.55 Ratio
is there any lockers or limited slips for the rear end? Yup lots and lots. Look on Ebay.
i think ill go for a locker in the back. did have that problem with the outer cv axle but thats fixed.
the tranny seemed to have a little lag on it so i got some slick 50 transmission tune up (10 bucks!!!) added that and im impressed.
well worth the 10 bucks. no hesitation now and the shifts are smooth!.
i have got 165/75/16 tyres on there and the speedo seems to be about 10% out now. 60mph is about 67 and 70 is about 77-78! anything to fix that? diablo didnt work, the truck is a 97. Ford says to change out the little gear on the transfer case but id like a chip too!
am VERY impressed with the 4x4 capabilities of the truck even in standard form.
much better than any chevy i ever owned, (all bar the monster i built just for mud bogging but thats unfair!)
I am assuming that you have 265 tires? 165's would fit a Yugo.
I would have the tranny power flushed. This will remove clutch debris that builds up in the fluid over time.
Kerry,
No, I have no complaints about my tranny. It has help up good to some heavy towing. I would like to up the part throtte shift points a bit and firm it up. That will be fixed as soon as the funds allow me to buy a DiabloSport Predator from Ken.
Glad to here the tranny is taking care of you. I too, have a need to tinker with the shift points and such. I know how the saving of funds can be... just when I thought I was there, I had a big problem elsewhere suck the money out of me.
