Makes it really easy to drain out that excess oil the dealer puts in. Or the extra couple quarts you put in when you got distracted while being "helped" by your two year old daughter.
So how can I figure out if my truck has been overfilled? Do I need to drain it and refill with the 13 quarts or is there another way? This makes me believe that the problem may have begun immediately after I had my oil changed at the dealership at 5000 miles. I just had it changed again at 10,000 the other day. How do you guys recommend checking to see if it is overfilled. I'll try anything at this point. I'm sick and tired of having my truck in the shop for the same problem.
I would just drain a bit to get you to near the bottom of the has marks on the dipstick.
If you drain a bit too much, then add to get to the add mark and run it there for a while and see if the issue clears.
BTW, I was able to install my Fumoto valve by doing the little Dutch boy trick with my thumb. Removed the drain plug, slid thumb over the hole, slid Fumoto valve in and thumb away. . . Only lost about a cup of oil in the process.
Okay, I found it. I talked about the same problem (i think) in my post on 05 egr problems. Too much oil eh? I dunno, mine did the studder bark thing when driving it home brand new from the dealer. Unless they overfilled the oil too. Hmmmm, Yup, I think I'll try losing a little oil. On the other post, it was suggested to disconnect the egr hose (lf course doing it properly) to see if the egr might be the problem.
I'm at work right now, and will be here for a couple of days. If you guys find anything new in your trial and error, please post it so I can maybe follow suit.
Thanks, Tim
olfordsnstone,
Is your truck doing a stutter bark or just a wicked shudder during light acceleration under load? All I'm getting is a shudder, but no 'bark'. I am going to drain some of the oil today and see if that solves the problem. I will get back to all when I know.
I don't know what a stutter bark is, but I would describe mine as the "shudder under light acceleration." It only happened on a grade though. Didn't happen around town or to and from work. Then when I drained the 2 quarts of oil out of it, it never did it again. Please post your results, I'm very curious as to whether it will be the magic fix for you guys, too.
tyners3, Mine seems to be more of a miss on a gas engine, accompanied by a bark. I had initially described it to the dealer as the sound of tires hitting the wheel wells of a 68 corvette, doing 110 mph, hitting railroad tracks. Not that I've ever experienced anything like that....
But that's the best I can describe. I'm getting off shift tomorrow moring so I will log on here in the morrow to check if anyone else has made any progress by lowering the oil level.
I drained approx. 2 quarts of oil out yesterday and drove through all the spots I know the truck will shudder and it still did it. I did notice that the oil seems 'thinner' than I would expect it to be.(it was changed only a few days ago.) I am going to have it tested(the oil) as soon as my test kit comes in from Blackstone. I want to make sure that I don't have any diesel contamination thinning the oil.
I have had a 'flutter' in my '04 now for awhile. It only seems to happen when pulling a slight grade at around 50-55 miles per jour in OD. The RPM's will sit around 1500-1600 at this speed. With light throttle, the truck will 'shudder' until you give it enough throttle to downshift to 4th. The dealer has been working on it but so far no fix. They reflashed the truck last time it was in and hoped that a change in shift points might fix, but it is still doing it. I have another appointment with the dealer latter this week.
There is another thread on this forum about someone who had engineers look at his and it was determined to be the turbo. But considered "normal". Nature of the beast.
