So, on the way home tonight, I was going down a residential street about 35 mph when the X started to run really rough. It was like it was missing. Got home (about a half mile from when it started) and it barely made it up the driveway and into the garage. Put it in neutral and when I revved the engine, it felt like it was missing and a very "carbonish" smell was coming out the exhaust. No dash lights went on. I went in the house, told my wife about it, went back out, started it back up and it was acting the same. I drove it down the street and back with the same symptoms. Just as I was about to shut it off for the night, it began idling as smooth as ever. I took it out for about a two mile spin, and she ran just fine. Ideas? (I did put petrol in from a station I don't usually use -- 85 octane --, but that was before a 200 mile trip to Denver and back; of which it ran fine at 80 mph). I'm taking it to go swimming here in a little bit, so we'll see how she runs.
I expect this kind of behavior from my Mini and my Land Rover, NOT the X.
Thanks. Exactly what is a coil on plug coil? Remember, I'm used to dealing with Lucas electronics in my 60s and 70s British cars. . . (There are at total fo 8 fuses between both of my current cars.) They only have one coil, and in a pinch, a coil out of just about any vehicle available will get a Mini or Land Rover home. . .
