Hello everyone,
First, me being new to the diesel world, I would like to thank everybody in this site for sharing their knowledge with me and others alike. I have learned more about my old 85 in the last few evenings than I could imagine. My question to everyone is about the soup bowl. What was the reason for it, and does it make a difference you can feel when removed? Also, how does it effect mpg? I don't want to mess up a good thing (19 mpg)?
thanks again.
I removed myne and it didnt make it any louder, it was just a horribly restrictive piece of metal in the wrong spot on my truck. The right spot for it is the bottom of my garbage can along with the muffler, cat converter, and the stock intake tube.
Intake tube should go to huh? My truck is still completly intact under the hood. It looks just like the repair manual photos. Will I notice a difference in power gains with either?
The scoop looking thing mounted next to the radiator is restrictive somewhat but if you take it off run a 4 inch tube (dryer tube from hardware) down behind the radiator support bracket to suck in cool air.
See Dave's album for a better description and good pics.

Being a newbie here, where can I locate Dave's album to se the pics...Thanks

Sorry to piggy-back on this post, but mine aint no louder, either. I just cut mine off along with the baffle that directs airflow around the air cleaner. It sounds the same to me. I drove it on highway 5 in calif. central valley averaging about 75 to 85. The only difference i could "imagine" was a deep growling at high speeds. It does seem a bit more "peppy". I'd like to know what exactly gets louder.
I got a 5 inch turnout off a semi stack that would work good for a ram air intake sticking out of the hood. It would suck in rain and snow and I dont want to put a hole in my hood. Daves got the best setup.
I drive in a lot of winter ice and snow slush and when you meet oncoming traffic it can completely coat everything from the headlights to windsheild. The picture makes it look like the intake would suck in anything and everything that hits the grill area. Is there a baffle behind the grill or what keeps road slush from getting sucked in?

Reason: correct post messaged
That ziggster page guy from members.shaw.somethin made a snap on piece to go over the grill just in front of his intake for bad weather. it would take away the ram air but it was at least removeable
