I am hoping someone can answer this question for me. I have a 91 F350 460 ci, 4WD automatic w/OD and the transmission went bad. I have a friend who has a 1990 F350 2WD automatic that I can get the transmission for very good price. If money weren't a major problem I would just get a new rebuilt.
What I would like to know is will the transmission out of the 2WD work in my 4WD and if so what all is envolved in changing it to 4WD?
Does the donor vehicle have an E4OD in it? Check the VIN# sticker along the bottom. "E" indicates an E4OD. It is possible that a truck from year was ordered with a C6 (VIN code "G"). You can't install a C6 in an E4OD truck straight across. It requires extensive modification to do so. Also, the 4WD E4OD has a deeper trans pan and pick-up tube.
And finally, the E4OD as built by Ford during the early '90s was piece of junk. So, if your buddy's trans is a factory install then it's as good as dead anyway. A decent remanufactured E4OD with all of upgrades and a new converter will run you at least $2,000 in the box.
Thanks for the input. Right now I can't afford to put $2000+ in a trans. I may call some junk yards and see if they have one that would fit my truck. I don't use the truck that often and when I do it is only short local trips.
I wish money were no object cause I would have an 05 crew cab dually w/6.0 diesel.
